Reportedly, the study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, identified specific coconut oil fatty acids which have strong repellency and long-lasting effectiveness against multiple insects like mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies and bed bugs which are responsible for transmitting diseases to humans and animals.
Reportedly, a team of scientists led by Junwei Zhu found that coconut oil compounds are effective against biting flies and bed bugs for at least one week in laboratory tests. Some people said goodbye to DEET and used folk remedies or plant-based repellents.
Reportedly, according to researchers, field trials showed this all-natural formula can provide protection to cattle against stable flies for up to 96 hours or four days. Whereas, DEET was only 50 per cent effective against stable flies when compared to coconut oil which was more than 95 per cent effective. DEET lost its effectiveness after about three days when it came to bed bugs and ticks but coconut oil compound lasted for about two weeks.
Reportedly, coconut oil fatty acids had also provided more than 90 per cent repellency against mosquitoes — including Aedes aegypti, which can transmit Zika virus.
